Description: This paper proposes a hypothesis that the negative public policy implications of durational rating strategies in the medical insurance market are caused by lack of prefunding of durational deterioration of experience and constitute a failure to maintain an important part of the original insuring promise. Description: In this paper, a model is proposed as a potential explanation for the steady deterioration in loss ratios often observed on blocks of individual health insurance policies. This model, which incorporates assumptions of anti-selective lapses, can be used for morbidity projections and projections of the effects of rate increases. Discussions of this paper are included.

Description: The objective of this paper, prepared by the Society of Actuaries Committee on Pension Principles and Related Research, is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of using select and ultimate interest and salary scale assumptions in the valuation of defined benefit pension plans. Description: This paper by the SOA Committee on HIV research builds on past work to show three projections of the future of the AIDS epidemic. These scenarios can provide information to actuaries in considering the financial impact of AIDS for life and health insurance. Description: This paper discusses the pricing of bond options and interest-sensitive cash flows by discrete state/time models such as binomial lattices. Current binomial models are faulty because the put-call parity relationship may not hold for all periods and there may exist negative interest rates. This paper presents a binomial model without such riskless arbitrage opportunities. This model allows the initial term structure of interest rates to be prescribed exogenously, so that the model price for each stream of fixed and certain cash flows is the market price.
